There are monuments to the Canadian government and there are also museums to visit
Ottawa is the capital of Canada yet it’s not yet that popular among foreign visitors, a great excuse to get there now. There’s a lot of things to see and do in Ottawa and it’s a place for everybody, no matter if you travel in Canada alone, with a companion, or with your family.
There are monuments to the Canadian government and there are also museums to visit. The shopping is first-rate if that’s what you want, and you can experience the outdoors too, with adventures you can try out like whitewater rafting.
If you like period architecture, then you’ll appreciate the Gothic style of the Parliament buildings. Parliament Hill is the perfect lookout for the whole downtown area and a beautiful view of the Ottawa River. The government still meets here but you can take daily free tours to see the inside. Be warned however, the tickets may be free but are available first-come, first-served so you’ll need to get a place early. Why not take a stroll on the grounds afterward? You’ll see more of the river and a view of Quebec on the opposite bank.
A walk or drive down can bring you to Rideau Canal, which has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Starting from the St Lawrence River all the way to Ottawa, it empties out in a network of locks. A great way to see the city is through a boat ride that go through different locks to give you a different view of the city.
A place to not miss would be Gatineau Park, which is near the river as well. Wallow in the beauty of nature and explore the paved trails that crisscross the park. You won’t be bored with the one hundred seventy kilometers you can go on. Bikes are allowed in the park so you could take that for a spin. If you’re lucky to be there in the winter, you can go on the Rideau Canal, which is the largest skating rink in the outdoors in the world. Cold hands can be warmed up with a snack of “beaver tail” or a donut cake that is sold on the ice.
